Regardless of the medium or subject matter, Cui’s art in her mid-to-late career explored the recurring theme of being an artist as a process of self-awakening, growing directly out of spiritualism. By taking the strides to rid representational content, Cui experimented with minimalism and abstraction during this period. In the Qin-se series, she expressed an interest in exploring the body and mind’s place in the universe, attempting to articulate her practice as a spiritualist.
